Nursing is a career with virtually unlimited opportunities no matter where you live. But when it comes to the total number of jobs available, Texas ranks second only to the state of California. According to 2010 statistics, there were more than 250,000 nursing jobs already filled in Texas, with thousands more remaining vacant. That means there's plenty of work to go around for new graduates coming out of nursing school.
If you want to become a nurse in Texas, you'll first have to complete an educational program and take a licensing exam. Only students attending schools with state approved programs are eligible to take the licensing exam. Nonetheless, there are six schools in the state offering unapproved programs. It's not exactly clear what graduates of those programs will do upon completion of their education.
In the state of Texas licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are known as licensed vocational nurses (LVNs). Other than the name, the jobs are pretty much the same. The LVN is the entry level position in the nursing field and requires only a year-long certificate program to acquaint students with the daily tasks of nursing. In order to become a registered nurse however, you'll need to earn a bachelor or associate degree at a minimum. Some specialties require further education up to, and including, a master or doctorate degree.
We have compiled a list of schools in Texas offering state approved nursing programs. Some of these schools offer only one or two specific programs, while most offer LVN certification as well as associate, bachelor, and master degree programs for registered nurses. You'll have to contact individual schools on your own to determine whether or not they have a program suitable for you.
